Aloe barberae Synonym: A. bainesii Asphodelaceae -Grasliliengewächse Heimat: S-Afrika. Sehr große und baumförmig wachsende Art aus dem Süden Afrikas, die dort im dichten Busch und in niedrigen Wäldern vorkommt. Als Gesamthöhe werden 18 bis 20 m angegeben. Damit ist die Art die wohl größte Art der Gattung auf dem afrikanischen Festland. Die Pflanze verzweigt sich im oberen Teil und bildet dadurch eine ausladende Krone mit den an den Zweigenden schopfig angeordneten Blättern. Dort befinden sich auch die recht großen Blütenstände (roter Pfeil).

Blütenstand der Aloe barberae. Die einzelnen Blüten sind etwa 4 cm lang. Die Staubfäden ragen weit aus der Blüte heraus. Die Blüten werden durch Nektarvögel bestäubt. Zu sehen im Kakteen- und Sukkulentenhaus. (14.01.2005, M.H.H.)

Aloe barberae is probably the largest species of continental Africa. The widely diverging plants grow up to a height of 18 to 20 m. The plants were found grown in bushland and open forests. The inflorescences are found among the crowded leaves at the tips of the branches (red arrow). A single flower is about 4 cm long and has protruding stamens. The flowers are pollinated by sunbirds.
