Clitoria ternatea - Blaue Bohne Fabaceae - Schmetterlingsgewächse Heimat: wahrscheinlich S-Amerika, heute überall in den Tropen vorkommend. Die Blaue Bohne ist besonders durch ihre leuchtenden Blüten auffällig. Eigenartig ist die 'gedrehte' Blüte, d.h. die normalerweise nach oben stehene Fahne der Schmetterlingsblütler zeigt hier nach unten. Die Hülsen sind behaart. Die Pflanze ist ausdauernd und wächst als kleine Liane. Auf Feldern angebaut, ist sie eine gute Futterpflanze. Die blauen Blüten werden zum Färben von Speisen (Reis) verwendet. Junge Hülsen sind angeblich auch eßbar. Zu sehen im Victoria-Haus. (09.10.2003, M.H.H.)

Clitoria ternatea (Blue pea, Kordofan pea) probably originates in tropical Southern America and is now distributed world-wide in the tropics.
The shiny blue flowers that have some peculiarities: the standard is turned to the bottom, while in most other species of the Leguminosae they are upright oriented. The pods are hairy.
The plant grows as a perennial vine or small liane. Sometimes it is cultivated as palatable forage legumes. The flowers are also used for dying food, especially rice. Young pods are apparently edible.
