Distribution
Arabis alpina occurs mainly in mountains or in the arctic tundra.
In Germany the species is mainly distributed in the Alps. A few occurrences are
situated in the lower mountains of southern Germany going with a few records
north to the Harz Mountains. Our plants are from the only occurrence in
Eastern Germany from the southern margin of the Harz Mountains (close to Ellrich). The
plants are growing there on gypsum soil.
Biology and growth
The plants are perennial, evergreen and make up dense lawns. The seed set of
cultivated plants is good and the seeds germinate well.
Conservation
Seeds are sown in January in slightly sheltered conditions. Division of older
plants and cuttings are possible. Partly, seeds germinate around the mother
plants. The plants are grown in sandy soil and are watered sufficiently that
the pots become not dry throughout. The winter is persisted without problems.
Establishment on secondary places with material propagated in the Botanical Garden
was successful.
