Bupleurum virgatum Cav. (B. gerardii auct.)

Distribution
Bupleurum virgatum is a plant from southern Europe that was brought perhaps by the Crusaders to our region. The plants are from the Selketal (Saxony-Anhalt).

Biology and growth
The plants are winter annuals, i.e. they germinate in autumn und flower next spring. They produce a sufficient large amount of seeds that germinate good.

Conservation
Seeds are sown from the end of September until the end of November in the cold frame or in a moderately heated greenhouse. Sowing in spring decreases the germination rate. Thereafter, young plants are kept in flat trays with a poor soil. Later they are transplanted into pots with a diameter of 9-10 cm. The soil is then ordinary garden soil. The pots are watered not too much.

Places of conservation
Plants are in the Botanical Gardens of Halle and at the Kapenmühle (Biosphere reserve: Mittlere Elbe).
